Iowa Flea Flicker: James Vandenberg, Jordan Cotton Connect On Long TD Pass Against Minnesota (VIDEO)

Iowa Flea Flicker

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz went deep into the playbook and called a trick play in the second quarter against Minnesota, and his Hawkeyes executed it to perfection.

Already up 10-0 with the ball just beyond midfield, Iowa signal-caller James Vandenberg handed it off to fullback Mark Weisman. Weisman then tossed it back to Vandenberg, completely faking out the secondary allowing wide receiver Jordan Cotton to run well beyond the last defender.

Vandenberg completed the flea flicker with a 47-yard touchdown pass to Cotton to extend Iowa’s lead to 17-10.

Frank Schwab of Yahoo’s Dr. Saturday noted that Ferentz doesn’t call a many trick plays. But it seem like he does, the team runs them perfectly. Maybe he’ll add a couple more to the playbook.

Iowa had a 24-0 lead at halftime but Minnesota got on the board in the third quarter with Max Shortell’s 9-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Fruechte.
